Morpheus vs Hyperion
The wide-view stablemate for my SW120/600 is the Hyperion 21mm. At f5, the Hyperion was challenged and after reading reviews, the Morpheus was reported capable with fast scopes.
The Hyperion at its native 21mm loses the fight about 50% out. Too much field curvature. I added the 14mm ring to bring it to 17.4mm and it was game on. The Morpheus presented a much flatter and immersive FoV. 74° over 68°. It stayed acceptably flat out to about 90% with no apparent edge brightening while viewing the Double Cluster at 2.2° TFoV.
What struck me was the Morpheus’ higher contrast, blacker background and more punch of colour of the stars. It made the Hyperion’s view almost mono chromatic and lifeless.
The Morpheus is what was expected; a sharp, wide, engaging view. It’s not a finder eyepiece, it will be my main eyepiece.
